DESCRIPTION: We were appointed as Architects to assist with the Conservation and restoration project to refurbish the Boer War Memorial of a Derbyshire village. The emphasis was on repair of the core of the memorial and the replacement of unsuitable materials. The hope was to give the Memorial a new lease of life.
We put together a design and specification centred around protection of the Grade II Listed obelisk, the cleaning and re-building of the stone walls, the replacement of concrete slabs with stone flags, the cleaning and re-bedding of the iron railings, the removal of the brick time capsule and re-building in stone with Heritage cap stone, and concrete memorial plaques replaced with stone.
A new flag pole holder was designed and fabricated, together with rail across front for wreath displays.
We obtained all consents required to go ahead.
The project was completed in November 2018, in time for the Armistice Day Centenary event which took place in the village, with a parade culminating at the memorial for the armistice service.
We visited for the service and it was great to see the project playing its part in this historical event which meant so much to the community.
